Special Event at
the Academy of Natural Sciences
Date: Thursday,
July 22nd Time: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm Location:
Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences
19th St. & Ben Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia
Join us at the Academy of Natural Sciences to watch the “awesomely
awful” movie Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and check out the
Creatures of the Abyss exhibit! (Read below for more information
both the exhibit and movie.) The
Academy’s own Paul Callomon and Jason Poole will be watching with us
to comment on the many, many, many scientific fabrications and
generally poor filming (think Mystery Science Theater!) The event
will include FREE hors d'oeuvre and FREE adult
beverage.
5:00 – 7:00 Enjoy hors d'oeuvre and drinks. Explore our Creatures of
the Abyss exhibit - see an actual giant of the seas – a colossal
squid!
7:00 – 9:00 Showtime in our auditorium!
$30 PSU Alumni Assoc. Philadelphia
Chapter members / $40 PSU non members TO REGISTER:
Check out the
Press Release! The Academy of Natural Science is
a short (5 -10 min) walk from suburban station (access to regional
rail and the subway) and it is located in Center City right on the
Ben Franklin Parkway. About the Creatures of the
Abyss Exhibit: Take a journey to the most inaccessible
ecosystem on Earth: the deep sea. This vast and largely unexplored
environment is freezing cold and utterly dark. On top of that, the
water pressure is so extreme that it would instantly crush you. Yet,
this inhospitable world is home to the greatest diversity of life on
the planet. Come and explore this alien and amazing world where
submarine canyons run deeper than the Grand Canyon and sea mounts
dwarf Mount Everest, where fish swallow prey larger than themselves,
where life thrives next to scalding and toxic hydrothermal vents,
and where myriad creatures put on dazzling shows of light through
bioluminescence. Stand next to a life size 26 foot colossal squid.
Feel the pressure of deep sea exploration. Take a virtual tour in a
manned deep sea submersible. About the movie:
Reviews call it "terrible-but-actually-quite-good-fun," "If
ever there was a film that seemed designed with Mystery Science
Theater 3000 in mind, this is it," and one review called the plane
attack scene "the epitome of monster awesome." The acting may be
poor but the incredible action scenes will give plenty of great
fodder for our Academy's experts and this unique, humor-filled
review!
