The Philadelphia chapter has a long
history and a bright future!
It is the
dedication and enthusiasm of active Penn Staters that has helped the
Chapter have an impact in Philadelphia. Dating back to 1924, the
Chapter has maintained a high level of commitment to carry out the
mission of the Penn State Alumni Association:
To connect alumni to the University
and to each other, to provide valued services to members, and to
support the University’s mission of teaching, research, and service.
The end of World
War II proved to be the catalyst to add women and young alumni to
the Chapter’s membership directory. Since that time, the Chapter
strives to accomplish its own mission, visions, and goals of:
“uniting and
maintaining a network of Penn State alumni, while giving back to
the community, providing scholarship, demonstrating pride, and
promoting Penn State in the Philadelphia area.”
This mission has been carried out in most recent
years by increasing membership to over 180 active members and
engaging in spirit activities such as; Tail Great and Bowl Game
parties. Community service events have included benefit dinners for
worthy charities and foundations as well as the creation of the
Liberty Ball, A Knight for the KidsTM
, which fundraises for the Hershey Medical Center
through donations to the Penn State Dance Marathon. Student outreach
occurs through the annual Student Send Off held to welcome the
newest members of the Penn State family each fall before they attend
their first classes. Professional Development initiatives have
included home buying workshops, relationship building seminars, and
business card exchanges.
